May 2011 Monthly Wrap-Up

Musical goal: bass.

Technical goal: make the bass sound good on crap speakers.

In May, I wanted to explore strange corners of bass-riddled electronic. This month's schedule was perturbed by the launch of Cloak but I'm now back on track!

Week #18: In which I attempt dubstep. The hardest part here was figuring out to use an LFO sync'd bandpass (not lowpass) filter on the bass sound. With apologies to the European Commission On Nuclear Safety, whose 2003 video was shamelessly sampled for maximal radioactivity.

Week #19: In which I attempt Autechre. I wanted the machine to speak for itself, and speak angrily. If I play this live, I promise to never acknowledge the audience's presence.

Week #20: In which I attempt strange metric layering. 10 against 4; take your pick which is the base meter. Combines bass and Nik Bartsch in equal measure.

Week #21: In which I attempt tension. I like how this track's empty spaces give way to very tense chordal madness.

Plan for June: things beautiful and out of reach.
